2016 Bowman Baseball Trading Cards

One solitary pack of 2016 Bowman to share. There are 150 base cards in the set and 150 Prospects to collect. All 150 base cards and all 150 Prospects are available in a ridiculous number of parallels- Silver, Yellow, Purple, Blue, Green, Gold, Orange, Red, Metallic, although the last three are limited to a certain number. The 150 Chrome Prospects 'parallel' are available in parallel variations- Refractor, Green Shimmer Refractor, Orange Shimmer Refractor, Purple Refractor, Blue Refractor, Green Refractor, Gold Refractor, Orange Refractor, Red Refractor, SuperFractor, again the last three are limited.
The six different inserts: Scouts Top 100, Family Tree, International Ink, Rookie Recollections, Sophomore Standouts and Turn Two also come in many different parallel versions. At some point it becomes absurd.

There are only 7 Boston Red Sox cards to collect, but in so many multiple parallel mutations, there are close to 10,000 cards to collect. I may have exaggerated a little.
The Red Sox available are:
#10 David Ortiz
#13 Mookie Betts
#15 Dustin Pedroia
#16 Xander Bogaerts
#92 David Price
#111 Craig Kimbrel
#129 Henry Owens RC

There are 10 cards in a pack.
The pack:
#30 Carlos Correa Astros
#64 Stephen Vogt Athletics
#102 Todd Frazier White Sox
#126 Hector Olivera Braves
#BP92 A.J.Reed Astros
#BP120 Justus Sheffield Indians
#BP140 Chris Bostick Nationals
#BCP17 Fernando Tatis Jr White Sox
#BCP116 Pierce Johnson Cubs
#II-JS Juan Soto Nationals

No colourful parallel, just your bog standard chromes.

2016 Donruss Baseball Trading Cards

The first of many packs from the ever generous Big B from Waxaholic. Brian and I have often lamented about being baseball collectors outside the USA, so these are a welcome surprise. Thanks Big B.
With Donruss/Panini there appears to be no sitting on the fence.
Collectors love them, saying things like;  'superior to Topps', 'great design',  'thicker card stock' , 'great inserts'
or hate them, 'ugly, ugly, ugly', 'overly glossy', 'total junk'  and even accusations of reusing the same photographs. Some collectors just don't like them because they are unofficial and have no logos.
As far as I'm concerned, who couldn't like at set that includes a chicken!

The Red Sox in the base set are:

Diamond King #4 Xander Bogaerts
Rated Rookies #44 Henry Owens
#69 Xander Bogaerts
#84 David Ortiz
#118 Mookie Betts
#162 Rusney Castillo
#168 Eduardo Rodriguez
#185 Carl Yastrzemski
#188 Pedro Martinez

There are 8 cards in the pack and I have 1 pack! It contained:

#111 Ryan Braun Milwaukee
#117 Shin-Soo Choo Texas
#131 Yordano Ventura Kansas City
#164 Odubel Herrera Philadelphia
#168 Eduardo Rodriguez Boston
#195 checklist
#D82-3 Lorenzo Cain Kansas City
#TR6 Stephen Piscotty  St.Louis
(and a big lump of cardboard!)

Nice- one 1 pack and 1 Red Sox!

This one has been sitting for a while gathering, dare I say it, dust. Shame on me.
The 2015 Bowman set consists of 150 base cards, including 30 Rookies. This is a reduction from last year, which had a 220 card base set. There are a number of base parallels including Silver, Purple, Blue, Gold, Retail-only Green, hobby-only Orange, Red, Black, Silver Ice, jumbo-only Red Ice and White Ice.
Traditionally Bowman is known for its prospects, which has grown to 150 cards. These are also available in a number of parallels; Purple, Blue, Gold, Retail-only Green, hobby-only Orange, Red and Superfractor. There are also parallels that were released in the Asian market only Black and Red.

The Red Sox checklist contains:

#117 Mike Napoli

Not a bad couple of packs, three Sox and a famous Red Sox sibling.
The first pack had way too many 'Hunters'.

2011 Bowman Draft Picks and Prospects baseball 'Value Pack'

Yes this is one of those packs. There could be a Mike Trout Rookie card tucked within the pack. A highly sort after card.
Let's not forget Dylan Bundy and a young fellow by the name of Bryce Harper. Their cards are all possibilities in this set. That is the beauty of Bowman Draft Picks and Prospects.
There are also a number of Red Sox prospects available in the set.
Matt Barnes,
Kyle Weiland,
Blake Swihart,
Ryan Lavarnway,
Henry Owens,
Tommy Hottovy and
Jose Iglesias.

The 'Value Pack'  contains 12 cards, which includes 3 Bowman Chrome cards.

The pack:
#26 Brandon Laird Yankees
#34 Logan Forsythe Padres
#40 Dee Gordon Dodgers
#77 Matt Young Braves
#BDPP11 Mike Wright Nationals
#BDPP14 Archie Bradley D-backs
#BDPP14 Archie Bradley D-backs gold border
#BDPP63 Brandon Nimmo Mets
#BDPP69 Jace Peterson Padres
Chrome
#13 Mark Hamburger Rangers
#BDPP74 Kyle Kubitza Braves
#BDPP36 Larry Greene Phillies refractor

Unfortunately no 'mega' hits but a fairly good cross section of future greats!
No bloody Red Sox either.

2012 Bowman Jumbo Pack

There is always a great expectation around the Bowman set. The self designated 'Home of the Rookie Card' hasn't failed to deliver in the past few years.
The 2010 Bowman Stephen Strasburg Superfractors sold for stupid money. In  2011 another National, Bryce Harper,  had Bowman cards selling for, not quite the heady heights of the Starsburg, but it was still highly sought after. No players setting the collecting world alight in 2012, although the inclusion of Harper again was enough to make this a desirable product.
There are 220 cards in the base set, available in a number of different variations, red, orange, blue and gold
There are 110 prospects available in base and chrome, also in a number of different variations, red, orange, green , blue and purple. Although it is the Chrome refractors and superfractors that collectors are after.
The Red Sox available from the base set are;
#20 Jacoby Ellsbury
#39 Carl Crawford
#46 Jon Lester
#64 Josh Beckett
#102 Clay Buchholz
#114 Adrian Gonzalez
#141 Dustin Pedroia
#159 David Ortiz
#187 Kevin Youkilis

The prospects are;
#BP25 Raul Alcantara
#BP29 Keith Couch
#BP55 Jose Vinicio
#BP66 Jackie Bradley Jr.
#BP93 Brandon Jacobs
#BP105 Xander Bogaerts
The Jumbo pack:
#25 John Danks White Sox
#37 Dan Harden Angels silver ice
#47 Jaime Garcia Cardinals
#63 Alex Rodriguez Yankees
#71 Hanley Ramirez Marlins
#80 Jimmy Rollins Phillies
#145 Brandon Phillips Reds
#172 Bud Norris Astros
#179 Carlos Gonzalez Rockies
#185 Jayson Werth Nationals gold
#207 Adron Chambers Cardinals
#214 Devin Mesoraco Reds
#BP8 Nick Kingham Pirates
#BP15 Jose Campos Yankees
#BP22 Claudio Custodio Yankees
#BP25 Raul Alcantara Red Sox
#BCP43 Rookie Davis Yankees
#BCP46 Anthony Fernandez Mariners
#BCP51 Brett Krill Giants
#BCP81 Taylor Whitenton Mets
Saved from a pony by a guy born in the same town as Julio Lugo.

A blaster of 2012 Bowman 'the home of the Rookie card'.

and one lousy Red Sox.

2011 Bowman

One of the Bryce Harper packs that collectors went nuts for last year. The odds of a Bryce Harper prospect auto are 1 in 2900 or how about the blue parallel version 1 in 19 500.
Will this hostage relocation pack be the 1 in 19000?
Oh and there are Red Sox available too!

2011 Bowman Jumbo

In the past these Jumbo packs have thrown in a few surprises and the following 2011 Bowman Jumbo is no exception. There is also the slim (very slim) possibility of a Bryce Harper card. This jumbo came through the Alley family, who recently bequeathed some more 2011 packs. A very generous bunch the Alleys from North Carolina.

I have yet to obtain a base card from the Red Sox , I have one a blue bordered Dustin Pedroia, so I still need:

#26 Dustin Pedroia
#46 Jon Lester
#87 Adrian Gonzalez
#92 Josh Beckett
#119 David Ortiz
#126 Jacoby Ellsbury
#129 Carl Crawford
#130 Clay Buchholz
#186 Kevin Youkilis
#192 Lars Anderson RC

Enclosed within:
#13 Matt Kemp Dodgers
#24 Mike Pelfrey Mets
#41 Shin-Soo Choo Indians
#97 Mitch Moreland Rangers
#99 Roy Halladay Phillies green border 045/450
#113 Billy Butler Royals
#144 Yovani Gallardo Brewers
#150 Michael Cuddyer Twins
#159 Michael Young Rangers
#170 Alex Rodriguez Yankees
#194 Konrad Schmidt D-backs gold border
#BP49 Phillip Cerreto Cardinals
#BP57 Angel Castillo Angels
#BP58 Adrian Salcedo Twins
#BP109 Darin Mastroianni Blue Jays
#BP110 Jonathan Villar Astros blue border 434/500
#BCP29 Johermyn Chavez Mariners
#BCP50 Mychal Givens Orioles
#BCP71 Evan Crawford Cubs
#BCP78 Cole Figueroa Bay Rays
checklist 4/4

So the surprise...no Red Sox but two numbered cards.

2007 Bowman Heritage baseball

A while back in 2006 before I had entered the world of blogging I made a decision to shave down my collection. I found a number of trading sites, Hobby Kings, The Bench and Sportscard Forum and then Sports Card Collectors UK. This was a (very) small band of US sports collectors in the UK. Most were basketball collectors, myself and one other collector were baseball. Our small band grew well into double figures, the dizzy heights of 30. There was about 8 of us who were regulars, so an idea was hatched to start some group breaks. The first baseball break we did was a blaster of this product 2007 Bowman Heritage. It was meant to be a box of cards but there was mix-up in communication. I gave up any hits for all the Red Sox, which ended up being very few. There were quite a few basketball group breaks but I just found no interest. I did notice though that the game used cards and autos were outstanding. Two boxes of 2008 Goudey were the next baseball group break but after that things turned a bit sour. The administrator of the forum, a guy called Jo, who had organised the breaks very fairly and smoothly, suddenly had difficulty with purchasing the boxes and went AWOL. We had organised a Mayo football group break, I liked the look of this product and was interested to see what we pulled. It never happened and he still has my money, Bastard. He continued to post his breaks on you-tube under the pseudonym of UKcardcollector and I pestered him politely for a while until he stopped posting, Bastard. I learnt a valuable lesson, always pay through paypal which I did at first then didn't have enough in my account so posted cash-idiot.
So unfortunately whenever I see 2007 Bowman heritage and 2008 Mayo I get a sour taste in my mouth, which is a pity because they are both very nice sets.
I still need 3 cards and 2 short printed variations to complete the Red Sox team set. They are;

#37 J.D. Drew
#41 Josh Beckett
#109 Curt Schilling
#243b Hideki Okajima SP
#250b Daisuke Matsuzaka SP
The pack:
#14 Mike Lowell Red Sox
#22 Michael Young Rangers
#47 Mark Teixeira Rangers
#71 Gary Mathews Angels
#220 Jeff Baker Rockies
#228 Elijah Dukes Bay Rays refractor
1/3 Checklist
#BHP28 Bryan Byrne D-backs
#BHP48 Donald Fines Bay Rays
One Red Sox but I already have it.

2009 Bowman baseball

The final pack from Mark, then it is onto the book he included ' The Teammates' by David Halberstam.
There are only one card I need to complete the Red Sox set, which is;

188 Kevin Youkilis

The Pack:
#47 Mike Jacobs Royals
#58 James Shields Bay Rays
#143 Lance Berkman Astros
#159 Shane Victorion Phillies
#190 Kosuke Fukudome Cubs
#BP59 Parker Frazier Rockies
#BP59 Parker Frazier Rockies gold border
#BP89 Bryan Petersen Marlins
#BCP9 Kevin De La Cruz Indians
#BCP116 Javier Rodriguez Mets auto

So there you have it. No Red Sox but an auto from an autograph collector. I wonder how often the gold border and base card are included in the same pack!

2009 Bowman Chrome Baseball

I was sent this pack along with a few others in a recent 'Trade' with the Alley family in North Carolina. They were generous and sent a five different packs, most of which I have cards but as yet to bust a pack.
There are a number of Red Sox I still need from this set;
#20, 22, 38, 49, 69, 89, 115, 140, 174, 188, 194, 205
Prospects set (BCP-)
#2,5, 26, 83, 104, 113, 139, 184, 187.

The pack contains 4 cards.

The pack:
#192 Trevor Cahill Athletics

Bowman Chrome Prospect #170 Mario Martinez Mariners
Baseball World Classic #39 Kyuji Fujikawa

Bowman Chrome Prospect #173 Santos Rodriguez White Sox
Refractor #244/250

Finally a card for Steve. I very rarely pull a White Sox card of any note. I like shiny cards but I am left to wonder about the reasoning behind 'chrome'. Has the concept worn thin or are collectors still enamoured with all things shiny?

2008 Bowman Draft Picks and Prospects Baseball

They forget the K.I.S.S motto~ Keep it Simple Stupid ~ with this set.
There are 55 cards in the Bowman base set.
There are 55 cards in the Bowman Chrome base set.
There are 110 cards in the Bowman Prospects base set.
There are 110 cards in the Bowman Chrome Prospects base set.
There are parallels for the Bowman: Red, Blue, Gold and a printing plate.
There are parallels for the Bowman Chrome: Red, Orange, Gold, Blue, Refractors, X-Fractors, Super fractors and printing plates.
I won't go into the variety of autographs...
This pack came from Rob at Texas Rangers Cards. There 7 cards in every pack of which 2 are Bowman Chrome.
The pack:
BDP1 Nick Adenhart Angels
BDP48 David Robinson Yankees
BDP17 Jaime Garcia Cardinals Chrome
BDPP16 Shane Dyer Bay Rays Chrome
BDPP63 Matt Cerda Cubs Gold
BDPP77 Cliff Pennington Athletics
BDPP101 Fernando Martinez Mets
No Red Sox!
The Resume, Skills and Up-close information on the back is very interesting. But if there is one thing I have learnt from these cards, about the up and coming players, is that they cannot sign their name for toffee. Most look like a scribble. It might be a minor complaint but they must know that there is a possibility of hitting the big time and their signatures will be sought after. A little effort and practice. I know a minor and very picky complaint.
