1989 Topps Big baseball cards 1st series

The Topps BIG baseball set is based very loosely on the 1956 Topps set. They are the same size and orientated landscape as were the '56 set. So could this be considered as a retro set?

Just like its 1988 counterpart it was released in 3 separate series. The 1988 released in 3 sets of 88 cards, however the 1989 set was much bigger and released in 3 sets of 110 cards. Series 1 being cards #1-110, series 2 cards #111-220 and the series 3 cards #221-330.

The packs contained 7 cards and were wrapped in cellophane.

1989 Topps baseball

This pack was included amongst some cards that I purchased from e-bay recently. I have a sneaking suspicion that you rarely find these wax packs unopened.
The 1989 Topps set was full of rookies, the one notable being Randy Johnson, but in a time where the market was flooded with cards most collectors have either: collected all the 1989 Topps they wish to own or have no interest in collecting all the 1989 Topps.
There are also some error cards which draw some attention but besides that it is not one of Topps stellar sets.
I need no more of the 33 Red Sox from this set, although still need the 5 Topps traded Red Sox.

1989 Topps Baseball Yearbook Stickers

In the new year, the Topps Premier League 'Official' sticker collection hit the shelves. A tabloid newspaper called the Mirror gave away 42 of the stickers for free. Six stickers per day for a week and included was a voucher to claim your free album. Although I wasn't able to get all the free stickers, I was able to claim 4 free albums.

I am a big fan of stickers, there are a few full albums(and empty ones) amongst my collection. I like the fact that they are tucked away neatly inside the book. I know that Brian from Waxaholic is a fan of stickers, he is so close to completing last years Premier League set.

So today I present the Topps Baseball stickers from 1989.
The disappointing thing about collecting Premiership stickers is that you discard the back. There has been some attempts at making them usable, quiz questions, trivia and making some sort of mosaic, but lets face it the manufactures have failed to find a way to make them anything but rubbish. They should look no further than the ingenious Topps sticker cards. Sticker on one side and a collectible card the other. Although they are not the photographic quality of the regular Topps cards, it solves the problem of the virtually worthless sticker back.

I have junk wax two packs of this particular year to open. One from the Alleys and the other from 'Big B' at Waxaholic, who like myself, thinks that junk wax is the dog's whatnots.

A Red Sox but not the one needed.
This second pack reminds me of an e-mail that I received very early in my blogging career. The collector asked if any I had any cards in my collection of players who last name (unhyphenated nor double barrelled) was longer than 13 letters. At first I thought this was a strange request but I did look through my collection. Unfortunately I was unable to find any players who met these requirements.
I know of some footballers; Ranger's Saltalamacchia, Bolton's Giannakopoulos, Uniteds Van Nistelrooij,or my personal favourite Celtics Vennegoor of Hesselink but these are double barrels.
Any advance on 13 letters?

There are 792 cards in the 1989 Topps set.
The subsets include: Future Stars, Topps All-Star Rookies, Record Breakers, Turn Back The Clock, All-Stars, Team Leaders, First Draft Picks, Checklists and Manager cards.
There are 15 cards and 1 stick of bubble gum.

Before I start the pack, I wonder whether anyone actually sent away for the t-shirt advertised? It sounds like a beauty,
