2007 Topps Flashback Fridays

The DeLong Gum Company was a Boston-based firm that issued a 24-card baseball set in 1933. Unfortunately it was the only set the company ever issued. Competing with the first Goudey release the same year, the cards designated as R333, were competing against the larger 240 card Goudey set. The Delong's, considered the more attractive cards, are now rarer and possibly more sought after than Goudey's efforts.

The backs of the cards include detailed playing tips written by Austen Lake, who was a Boston sportswriter. The backs are also numbered and include a message from DeLong Gum.

Flashback Fridays was a promotion involving Topps's Home Team Advantage stores. The first five cards were distributed in special packs (The same five cards are in every pack), with the remaining 20 cards given away, a different card every week. In order to get the card of the week, collectors had to buy a pack of Topps cards.

The 25-card set featured the design of the 1933 DeLong Gum set.

2003 Topps Red and Blue Backs insert

When Topps produced its first baseball cards back in 1951 they decided to go with two different sets called Red Backs and Blue Backs, although their official designation is 'A' series and 'B' series respectively.  Their objective was to use baseball cards to increase sales of their candy products. The cards were packaged as two connected cards along with a piece of caramel in a penny pack. Unfortunately the candy would 'melt ' and ruin the cards.

The cards were designed like playing cards, with rounded corners and either a blue or red back. The front showed a players picture and an 'action' (ball, strike, double). Long before Topps Attax the intention was to use the playing cards as a baseball card game. The game didn't catch on with card collectors, which led to a different (and more popular ) approach in 1952.

 

There are 52 cards in the Blue and Red sets, totalling 104 cards.

In 2003 Topps chose to produce an insert set that copied the 1951 design. Inserted in a ratio of about 1 to 12 in hobby packs and 1 to 8 in retail, the Red and Blue back insert is larger than its original counterpart and slightly more affordable.
Blue backs were inserted in Series 1 packs and Red backs in Series 2 packs. The cards are unnumbered although for checklist purposes I have used the designation used at The Cardboard Connection.

2012 Topps Heritage

Have you ever obtained a large pile of cards from the same set, just not enough to be a whole set but close enough to taunt you in to submission. Try to complete me, go on I dare you.

Well this was my own recent experience with 2012 Topps Heritage. I looked forward to 2013 Heritage, the design reproduction of the 1964 Topps set, but ended up purchasing a sizable chunk of the 2012 Heritage in the process, not enough to actually be the whole set although enough to consider completing the whole thing. Caught between a rock and a hard place I must choose.

There are 425 cards in the base set and 75 short printed cards numbered 426 to 500,
Fortunately for some collectors there is quite a few 'error' cards, colour swap and red/blue bordered variations. A little annoying if you are after the 'whole set', but team collectors and 'insert' collectors, will enjoy the variety that is offered by Topps Heritage.
I will attempt to complete the 425 base set, gathering as many short prints and inserts as possible along the way.

I have 247 and need 178 to complete the set.
I need these numbers.

2013 Topps Archives Mini Tall Boys Inserts

Here is another insert set that I completely forgot that I had started. The Mini Tall Boy insets in 2013 Topps Archives. 

When looking back at the cards that have caught my eye in recent years, Topps Archives has consistently included cards that fit my collecting habits. In 2012 Topps used the 1980 design in Archives, a set that has a special place in my heart for two reasons; it was the first set of baseball cards that I ever received and it was the first set I completed, with the added bonus that the 1980 design is one of my favourites. Topps has decided to use 1980 design again in 2014 Archives. Guess what I will be collecting in 2014.

The Mini Tall Boys 'subset' uses the oversized Topps Football set design from 1965, known as the 'Tall Boy', a name give because of their size. While regular modern cards measured 2 1/2" x 3 1/2", 'Tall Boys' were 2 1/2" X 4 11/16". 

As the name suggests the 2013 inserts are mini versions measuring a fraction of the 1965 originals.

I will be attempting to collect all 40 cards in the 'subset'.

1969 Topps Deckle Edge 'Insert'

1969 Deckle Edge insert

In 1969 Topps inserted these 'Deckle Edge' cards into the Series Three regular packs. Each card features a black and white image of the player with a facsimile autograph at the bottom. The edge of cards have a jagged, often called scalloped, edge. There are 33 cards in the set, although cards #11 and #22 can be found with two different players..

A unique oddball set for those who don't necessarily want their cards in perfect condition

Topps returned to the Deckle Edge design in 1974. A larger but rarer 72 card test set was released in a small limited area of the East Coast in the USA. These cards were much bigger than the '69 Deckle Edge and were officially referred to as 'Baseball Photos'. The picture on the front was 'full bleed', Topps had dispensed with the white border. The cards featured the same blue facsimile signature, however the back featured handwritten script of the player's name, team, position plus the date and location of the photograph. A small newspaper article about the player's career appeared beneath the writing.

1974 Topps Baseball Photos

 Topps again returned to the Deckle Edge design in 2012 with a 15 card insert set which featured A Deckle Cut Around The Edges.  Inserted into Topps Archives packs at a rate of 1in 10 packs. This insert is a definite throwback to the 1969 Deckle Edge.

2013 Topps Opening Day Lenticular insert Opening Day Stars

The lenticular insert has become a staple of recent Topps products; 2011 Lineage, 2012 Archives and 2012 and 2013 Opening Day. There is just something about these types of cards that interests me. The Lenticular process, which is used to create movement or depth in a picture, is nothing new. Topps tested lenticular /3D baseball cards in 1968 and 3D became a regular feature of Kellogg's cereals through-out the 1970's and early 80's and every collector has Sportsflix tucked away in there collection somewhere.
These modern inserts are showing depth rather than movement, nevertheless, this is a collection for the odd-balls amongst us or anyone who appreciates diversity in their baseball collection.
The insert set contains 25 cards and I intend to collect them all.

2012 Panini Triple Play

With the increase in postage prices from America, and my mishap with a previous purchase from Dave and Allen's Cards, I decided to go down another route altogether to complete this Triple Play set. There was the possibility of purchasing the cards from Germany, but it didn't work out any less expensive than purchasing through the USA, so I purchased a box of the Panini Triple Play from O Canada.
Big B from Waxaholic may be pleased to know that the purchase from a fellow country man went as smooth as silk- no hidden charges and they arrived super quickly.

2011 Topps Lineage Stand-ups insert

This 25 die-cut insert set is modelled on the 1964 Stand-ups inserted in 1964 Topps. Designed to be folded in half (heaven forbid) to display the player.
They were inserted into 2011 Topps Lineage at a ratio of 1 in 12 packs. Unlike some of the other inserts within Lineage there are no variations.

This 25-card set is based on the 1968 Topps 3-D set.

The Linegraph cards are based on the obscure XOGraph test issue from 1968. The original cards all have the following text on their backs.

The cards were inserted into 2011 Topps Lineage at a ratio of 1 in 12 packs. There are two variations available; black backs limited to 99 and Red backs limited to 1. Each featuring the original 1968 card backs.
Although the original experimental 1968 versions go for mega-money. This Lineage set is relatively inexpensive to complete, so complete it I will try.

Who says you need to complete one album before starting another?

The Topps 2012 Sticker Collection has 309 stickers to collect.

Theer are 245 players past and present, 9 Highlights and Hijinks, 25 Team mascots and 30 Team logos(2 per sticker).

Not a great deal of difference between this year and last year except there are no foil stickers in this years outing. 

So again I will bravely attempt to complete the whole sticker album.

2010 Allen and Ginter

My favourite set in 2010 was a close call between Allen and Ginter and Obak. I haven't attempted to collect a complete set of A+G set before so that pushes slightly ahead of Obak.

There are 350 cards in the 2010 Allen and Ginter base set, which includes 260 baseball veterans, 30 rookies, 35 champions from other sports and 25 historical figures/places.
There is also a 350 card mini parallel set. Other parallel sets including Wood (1of 1), Silk (#to 10), Bazooka back (#to 25), No Number back (#to 50), Black Border Minis and Allen & Ginter back minis.

I will attempt to collect the entire 350 base set, no mini's or parallels, however I will try to collect the 'Monsters of the Mesozoic'.
