2001 Upper Deck Decade 1970's baseball

 

This was a set that I tried not to like but it was impossible. The psychedelic colours,  'groovy' fonts and purple/orange combination of the packs certainly make this different. 
This was also a simpler time of collecting, no variations or short printed time limited gimmicks, just the base set, a few inserts, some relics and autographs. 

There are 180 cards in the base set, the last 90 cards are broken into sub-sets: 

Rookie Flashbacks #91- #110, 

Decade Dateline #111- #140, 

Award Winners #141- #170, 

1970 World Series #171- #180.

The inserts include:70's Super Powers, Bellbottomed Bashers,  Decade Dynasties, Disco Era Dandies and The Arms Race.

I purchased this blaster quite a while ago when it looked as if the card collectors in the UK were going to meet up in a sort of conference/get together type thing. However when push came to shove not many people were willing to travel since the collectors were spread across the UK, as far north as Scotland and me down south in Kent - so it never happened and doesn't look like ever happening. Hence the breaking of this blaster plus a few others in the future.

This set consist of 126 base cards, of which all are available in a circular die cut variation. This set includes 42 short-printed rookies, including Yankee slugger Hideki Matsui.

2003 Upper Deck Honor Roll

Here is an interesting concept from 2003, a 161 card set from Upper Deck. The first 130 cards in the set are two different cards for 65 players, the even numbered cards #2- #60 are short printed and apparently seeded into packs in a ratio of 1 to 6. Card #131 is a short printed (#to1000) exclusive Hideki Matsui card and the next 30 cards are Freshman Class rookies and prospects (#to2500).

There are two parallel sets called Silver Honors (#to150) and Gold Honors (#to25)

There are three relics inserts available; Dean's List Jersey, Grade A Batting Gloves and Leather of Distinction. An interesting feature of the Dean's List jersey is that each player has two cards, one for each initial in their name. Well maybe not that interesting really.

2003 Upper Deck MVP retail pack

In 2003 MVP was one of a large number of sets produced by Upper Deck. The MVP set consisted of 330 base cards, actually 329 cards as card number 248 didn't exist. The first 220 cards were issued in hobby and retail packs, the next 110 as part of a factory or update set.
There were three parallel versions available; black, gold and silver.
There were three inserts; 90 Sports Nut, 15 Express Delivery and 90 Celebrations, also available in a silver parallel set.
There were also the ridiculous number of relic, auto, game used cards.

There are 270 cards in the base set of 2003 Upper Deck First Pitch plus cards #271 - #300 are short prints.
There are 5 autographs to collect are 6 'stars', Ichiro, Gambi, Garciaparra, Sosa, Griffey Jnr and Griffey Snr.
Obviously Upper Deck were trying to boost this, almost pointless product, with the inclusion of auto's. There is no evidence to suggest it was successful. First Pitch always lagged behind Topps Opening Day, who were always one step ahead.

2002 Upper Deck Rookie Debut is not a set as such, more of an update for three previously released Upper Deck sets: Honor Roll, Ovation, and Victory. Rookie Debut was a retail exclusive update set.

An interesting idea to update three separate sets. Now it would be like Topps Update including Topps Update, Heritage, Chrome, Archives, Opening Day, Attax, Finest, Allen+Ginter, stickers, Gypsy Queen, Museum Collection, Platinum, Tier One, Tribute, Triple Threads...hang on that's just plain stupid.

 

2003 Upper Deck Play Ball

When this set was released in 2003, I remember thinking what a lovely looking set and I would love to collect the whole set thing. I pick-up a few cards here and there, but never fully committed to finishing it off.
The original Play Ball set produced by Gum Inc. in 1939, when no other gum companies were releasing baseball sets, was a simply designed -white bordered, black and white photograph with no writing on the front. The back featured a detailed biography of the player shown.
It wasn't until 1941, which the 2003 set is based on, did Play Ball add colour. This was the final set produced by Gum Inc, who after the Second World War, returned as the newly named Bowman Gum Company.
The artwork on the 1941 Play Ball cards is incredibly stylish, featuring solid backgrounds and shadows with a comic type picture of each player. The back again had a detailed biography of the player.

The 2003 Upper Deck Play Ball set is in the similar stylish 1930's-1940's design.

The 2003 cards are the modern standard 2 ½ by 3 ½ inches, which are bigger than their 1941 counterparts which are 2 ½ by 3 ⅛ inches.

 I will attempt to collect all 73 of the base set cards (and any short prints/reprints to come my way).

1999 Upper Deck PowerDeck

This can only be regarded as a gimmick, surely. Perhaps I am mistaken, maybe there were thoughts that this  'interesting' idea would take the card world by storm.

Each pack of PowerDeck's contained a CD, obviously shaped to fit snuggly in a pack of cards.

The CD showed highlights of the particular player. There were 25 CD's to collect. The paper cards included in the packs were called 'Auxillary', so the main set were the CD-Rom, the cards just happened to be in the pack too. There were 25 base cards as well. The checklist for the auxillary cards and CD-Roms were identical.

There were a number of inserts as well; Most Valuable Performances, Powerful Moments, Time Capsule . Each of these inserts were available in both auxillary (paper) and CD versions.

Each pack contained 2 auxillary cards and 1 CD-Rom.

A while ago I set out to collect the whole base set of 2009 Goodwin Champions. It is now 2012 and this particular pursuit is still wide open. 24 cards still to go from the 150 base set. It is slow going considering there are 4 cards per pack and I really would like to clear the decks before attempting another pursuit in 2012. That doesn't include the 2012 baseball sticker album, which I will pursue when the album arrives.

2007 Upper Deck First Edition

The second pack from Waxaholic. He must have raided the Upper Deck bin. I remember opening some blasters of 2007 Upper Deck.
10 cards per pack and the tempting proposition of collecting the first rookie cards of the season! The first 50 cards were Rookies and there were a few notables in the 2007 product as well; Troy Tulowitzki, Andrew Miller, Delmon Young, Adam Lind, Ryan Braun, Ubaldo Jiminez (although I don't think he was in First Edition), Josh Hamilton, Tim Lincecum, Dice-K, Alex Gordon (not sure they were in First Edition either)

2008 Upper Deck Series 2 rack pack

A great deal was said at the time of its unveiling in 2008 but the photography was a big plus on this set. It outweighed Topps big time for effort however it still didn't stop the demise of Upper Deck a short while later. The photography is certainly crisp and clear, all cards appear to be action shots and, the entire front of the card is taken up with photo. I think they refer to it as full bleed. Great work from Upper Deck. This set was definitely better than some of the others Upper Deck offered in the same year, X, Heroes, Documentary or Timeline and cannot be compared to Goudey or Masterpieces as they were aimed at different sort of collector.
